A short note on hypothyroidism
Thyroid gland is created beautifully to secrete the thyroid hormone. The hormone regulates the basal metabolic rate in the body as well as normal development of the body.
Hypothyroidism is a condition when there is decreased thyroid hormone secretion, while hyperthyroidism is the opposite of it.
Hypothyroidism is classified into 2 : congenital hypothyroidism and acquired hypothyroidism. Congenitally, there is abnormality of the pituitary or the thyroid gland itself which causes insufficient hormone production and secretion.
If the child presents with hypoglycemia, micropenis and midline facial defect, the suspect is hypothalamus. Thus show us the features of central hypothyroidism.
Acquired hypothyroidism is caused by autoimmune lymphocytic thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis). There is destruction of the gland by the body which treat it as ‘foreigner’.
In acquired hypothyroidism, the child presents with short stature due to developmental problem.
Treatment part, thyroxine hormone to replace the deficient. The dose is different according to age group.
