The End of Paeds

It’s a wise thing to do to spend our evening with sport or outdoor activities. I am so relieved to complete one of the toughest posting which is paediatric posting. Enduring the very last day in the department was so hard. Time flew so slow the whole day. What is needed is patience and rational thinking.

Right now I have the chance to play in the evening. Previously during paeds posting, I had to sacrifice the whole month without playing any sport in the evening. That’s why my stamina decreased already a little bit. haha.. So now as I have time to play, I hope my stamina increases so that I can enjoy the sport very much.

Although the 1 month of paeds posting was full of tense as well as boring moment, I learned a lot during the period. The senior were so glad to teach us any problem or doubt that we had. And, what is more important, they do their work efficiently and confidently.

One day, there was a girl brought by her parents to the ward due to convulsion. The girl was having muscle spasm of both upper and lower limbs. Froth also came out of her mouth.

Immediately, the girl was brought into the treatment room. While few of the doctors hold her hands and legs, one of the senior PG took the Jelco and insert it into the vein. He did it perfectly when the vein was identified. It was difficult to put the Jelco when there is muscle spasm of the hand. Only experienced doctor can do it within seconds.

After putting the Jelco, it was easier to inject the anti-convulsant drugs so that the effect of the durgs is faster. In emergency condition like convulsion, the intravenous (IV) line is the route of choice for drug injection in the body.

That was one emergency case in the ward that I witnessed. I still have few cases to be shared but, let me tell it in the next post.

I was posted in NICU during last week of paeds posting. Working in NICU was such a hectic and tension job in this department. We had to monitor the babies very attentively as those were having trouble and need special care.

I will share the story later on. It was such a great experience to be in NICU although the burden of work is high.

Ok. Till then. May all of you have a pleasant day tomorrow.

See ya…

* Jelco – an IV catheter.

* NICU – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
