How Beautiful The Butterfly Is

To enjoy the beautiful scenery of the the mountain and the sunset is an awesome experience for us. Thanks to the precious pair of eyes, we can see the world full of magnificent colours which enlighten our days.

The reflection of the sun rays on the object help us to see those various colours. Without sun, there is no vision and consequently no life at all.

The excess sun rays also bring harmful effect to the eye. This is one of the important cause in the development of cataract. Cataract, sounds familiar?

Cataract is one of the common eye problems among the older people. It is a condition when there is opacification of the lens which affect the vision, be it near or distant vision.

Majority of the cataract patients are in the age group of above 50 years (golden age). Most of them who come to the clinic, work as a farmer. So occupation is a very very important question that should not be missed.

Why it is usually found among farmers? Well, they do work in the field without sun ray protection. The high intensity of the rays, especially during summer may cause the structural problem of the lens. This may cause changes in the lens function also and vision is hampered.

The patient may have difficulty in near and distant vision. They cannot see a damn sentence or alphabet shown to them. The more severe cases cannot appreciate finger counting also. The last test to be done is by using the torchlight to assess the perception of light and projection of rays.

The best treatment is to admit the patient for surgery. It should be advised to the patient, otherwise how are they going to live their life and doing all the chores?

The preferred surgical procedure is small incision cataract surgery (SICS) with posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL). It is the standard treatment here. I think it is the surgery of choice all over India.

Growing old cannot be avoided to all of us. Approaching older age, the extent of vision decreases and our work may be limited. As we are still young and healthy, let’s take good care of the eye so that we won’t be regretting one day in the future.
